The ad for a 1997 BMW 318i with a 5-speed that was removed from craigslist Saturday is back up!

My dad's going to text him tomorrow about going to take a look at it!

It has 177,000 miles on it, but it looks to be very well taken care of. The vinyl/leather looks brand new, and the paint looks nice.

They're asking $2,500, which sounds like a NP IMO.

None of the pictures are high enough resolution to pull the vin or plate number from to run a history report. When you text him ask for either of these things. I'm curious. This seems suspiciously NP. But still go for it.

Just be wary of the cooling system, if the temp gauge ever goes more than slightly past center (more than 1 needle width) you stop right then and there, tow it home or to the shop and revamp the cooling system or else you're gonna blow the headgasket spectacularly and possibly worse things. Dont ask me how I know.

You can get a MyCARFAX account for free which gives you the entire service history. You can see what has been replaced, when it was replaced and where. It's easier than asking the person for all that stuff over the phone. It only works for shops though. My 1999 Saab 9-3 convertible only had the dealer's 5ooo mile tune up and nothing after it. My Tacoma had data up until I bought it.

I've had sales that are listed as private sales actually be dealer sales. But at the same time he also has it listed as an automatic while the pictures and description clearly show the 5 speed. The add isn't "questionable" but it also isn't solid. I'd say yellow flag and just proceed with caution.

Their reliability is great, people is the issue with them. BMW designs things knowing full well that in 100k miles or 10 years its probably going to need to be replaced and expects the owners to understand that, because you know, Germans. Yes some things get though like the cooling system or window regulators but if you do the proper maintenance at the right time they will run forever.

Good! I also skip having a shop check it out when they're under $1500. Haven't bought a car for more than $1400 yet though so I've never spent money on a pre-purchase inspection. I've gotten by pretty lucky. Clean living.
